a Halloween top ten

I've been quiet lately, I know, and I'm sorry. I've been taking some time to get some things figured out for myself, and I have felt like retreating into myself a lot more than I have felt like reaching outwards. Plus, it's been off-and-on rainy, so I haven't been taking many pictures lately.

What I can say is that this week, this one right here, is quite possibly my favourite week of the entire year. It's Halloween week! So, in celebration of the beginning of this magical week, here is my top ten favourite things about Halloween!

10. The smell of fireworks. I don't particularly enjoy the noise or the light of them, but there's just something about the smell of them. Smells like... Halloween! And sparklers are fun...

9. Halloween music. That's right! I'm a sucker for the monster mash. We have this really old burnt CD, no idea where it came from, labelled simply "Halloween songs" in black sharpie. It's got all the classics. The Monster Mash, Love Potion Number 9, Thriller, The Time Warp... I'll admit, Im listening to it right now. It's gold. We blast it on repeat all night for all our trick or treaters!

8. Halloween movies on TV! Classics like Beetlejuice and The Addams Family always get me in a Halloween-ey kind of mood, and I love scary movies so a month long of them on TV is good news for me!

7. Halloween TV specials. This may be a result of growing up in the era of TV shows which really went all out for Halloween, but I can't get enough of them. Top favourites shows with great Halloween specials:

6. Haunted houses, pumpkin patches, and corn mazes. One of my favourites is Fright Nights at the PNE, our local amusement park. They bring in like 8 haunted houses and you get to ride the roller coaster in the dark!

5. Trick or treating! I use to love doing it as a kid, now I love seeing all the little kiddos in their cute costumes come to the door. And I love how that makes Halloween in large part about the kids (well, at least until about 9 o'clock, ha ha).

4. Decorating. Any holiday that warrants blatant decoration of the exterior of the house is a winner to me... We're decorating on Friday, I'll post some pics after!

3. Pumpkins. To carve, to eat, to look at, to decorate with... Love them!
2. Candy. Complete strangers give out candy, and not in a creepy way. Enough said there, I think.
And, my all time favourite thing about Halloween:

1. Costumes! There's a feeling in the air this time of year... it's the feeling that, for one or two nights, all our normal social boundaries give way a little. Things that weren't possible before become possible. People dress in outfits they would normally never wear, adopt personas that are not their own... For one night, we can all be whoever we choose to be (alive or dead, real or not)... It love that feeling!

Can't wait for Saturday!

  1. Pumpkin carvings, free candy and horror movies are I think the top three for me, in that order. Plus Momma-G getting more excited about the holidays then we would ever get, she would be dressing up as soon as October 1st.

  2. Your little red riding hood costume was made for you by Gramma Jean. It would have been the last time you say her. TDS

  3. Cole - I will be that Momma-G. Give me ten to fifteen years :).

Aw Mom, I didn't know that! Sweet.
